Sorry Subway, But I Hate Your Sandwiches

Subway is one American chain I can care less for. I have tried few times and each time. I try to really like it, but I fail to fall in love with America's biggest sandwich chain. The food tastes bland, it lacks flavors and it almost always comes with an after taste in one's mouth. I did get sick once at college after eating Subway, but I do not hold that against them. Yet, I am still not too pleased with their subs. I am certain, they have a huge budget for adverting and they are everywhere, but nothing makeup for a sub-par taste.

At best it tastes like chewable cardboard. The bread lacks that distinct bread taste, and has a strange texture. The meat is anything but fresh--now we know they do not slice their meat in the back of the store but in some factory in Iowa. And the fresh produce are really fresh, but fresh does not always mean good tasting. It's if Subway has pledged to purchase only the freshest produce in exchange for a good taste. Mass production sacrifices the flavor of the food.

Then all those  lackluster combinations they make--the best thing about the sub is its creative marketing name, but the end product often disappoints. This is not an issue of healthy food--even the fattening versions of Subway creations disappoint in the taste test. I think they have also made it a lot more confusing with their different charts and prices for foot long, it's like gambling, you never know what to order.

I do not have any of those experiences at their rival stores--Quiznos and Arby's offer plenty of taste and freshness too without that after taste I only seem to get at the Subway. I am hardly the only one to write about this, just to be sure about it, I asked Roa to join me for a lunch in two different occasions, and every time she gets upset by the food we order from the Subway.  And the sad part is, neither of us are food snobs.

The One Way To Wake Me Up According To My Wife

True Story....

When I am tired, I dose off on the bed, I get in heavy sleep mode, and Roa knows that nothing can wake me up. That happened few days ago, I was exhausted, and was lacking in sleep. I slept while watching a comedy with her.

She let me sleep for an hour, but then she would not let me sleep early...and it's Ramadan, if you can eat, eat and do not sleep. So in order to wake me up...she used a fool proof trick. I learned this after I have gotten married.

It turn out no mater how tired I am, if I spot a plate of sliced up watermelons and a fork next to them, I will wake up, this is the bait Roa uses to get me back from my deep sleep. I have embraced it too. That's why Roa always makes sure, we got plety of watermelon--at least during the summer season.

Food Riots, My Bland Tasting Chicken and GMOs

Often Times, people talk about how food does not taste real and how food items like chicken, seafood and produce now taste bland. It's not that I disagree with them because I do agree with those observations. But this is why America has so many sauces and salad dressings, they help give flavor to otherwise dull food. No one needed sauces in the country side in the turn of century....food tastes good naturally.  No need to modify the taste or add some flavor to it.

Now a 10 years later, the world keeps on growing, and no sign this growth is slowing down. The more the merrier is how I live my life too, but when it comes to food something had to give. I come from a family of 10, so I won't preach the virtues of birth control and all that spiel. America and the world has found it easier to solve the food crisis than to tell people how many kids to have.

So they went to work working on genes, and harvesting better crops, that requires less water, less heat, less this and more that. That's why now food is so cheap in many parts of the world. America really feeds the world, all that corn and wheat, beef, potatoes in middle America helps maintain America's soft power. By controlling so much of many basic goods America has the upper hand without even firing a bullet. To their credit, they do some charity work with that food too. But we are all self interested, so charity is nit the first thing policy makers wake up with every morning.

GMOs, Hormones....and farm seafood are all necessary evil, we simply cannot afford to get on our collective high horses and preach that such things are bad for us. It's either these things or starvation. Have you checked out the price of an organic chicken lately? I bet you did not. My point is, to make food like my grandparents had would be costly and in fact sometimes selfish. A gallon of milk is cheaper than some high end gallon of water, do the math and give me call.

Food riots are nothing strange, in order for this world to be peaceful, food prices have to be as low as possible, and that's a relative term. No one wants to live in a world where people cannot afford the food, because this world will be anything but peaceful. So, go ahead and add all the sauce you want on those chicken breasts, you picked for $6.99 at frozen food section. If you enjoy a Mac Jr. hamburger for a dollar, you do not need to ask what's in it, it fills you up. I bet you could not make it if I have given you 3 bucks. By the same token, the watermelon might not be that sweet, but its price sure is.

Cairokee On Coloring Eggs and Jamming With Zap

Coloring Eggs is popular around Eastern, but in Egypt it is also popular around Spring Festivals--an ancient Pharaoh practice. So when you are literary the hottest rock band in Egypt and you want to throw a concert, you bring out the eggs.

The concert that's being promoted has been called off due to security concerns, but the video where the band has a jamming session with Thrwat Zap will be around for some time. This is a humor filled clip where the lead from the band talks about the virtues of eggs.

This is what they call creative advertising. It makes people want to share it and with tit the announcement for the event.

American Food, I Just Cannot Get Used To

There are things that I have come to love about food in America, but there are things I really cannot imagine myself eating--I have tried them and found that no amount of acquired food taste can fix it. For example, many find Jerky meats weird, I do not. Also in Latin America, they think, Root Beer is medicine. I happen to enjoy root beer. Sweet and Sour tastes took m a while to accept and ultimately love. We are foreigners in this land, but Americans will be foreigners somewhere else.

Here are few things I do not like, I just cannot
  1. Peanut Butter
  2. Corn Bread
  3. Zucchini Bread
  4. Pudding
  5. Oatmeal
  6. Pasta and Broccoli (It took years not to hate it)
  7. Fruit Jello (I am bring told this is just a Utah thing)
  8. Cool Aid
  9. Pinto Beans
  10. Corn Dog (I know many Americans eat them when they are too poor, I certainly had my days)
  11. Reese's Peanut Butter cups (I know I will enrage many of you)

The Fat, The Skinny And The Ugly Tax

Mississippi May Ban Restaurant Sales to the Obese on food that might contribute to obesity. This is beginning to sound like a decent law. However, I think to make sure this legislation is fair to all people, it needs an amendment.

Skinny people are no longer allowed in salad bars. Yes, those skinny people need some fat to keep their bodies healthy in the event of a health scare. It only sounds fair to me! The skinny cannot expect us to let them eat health food all the time, they need to do their part too. This is America and here, do not like anybody to get a free pass.

This is my simple contribution to humanity.

P.S. While on the subject, I think less attractive people should be also banned from salad bars. They may lose the weight, some things might never change so grab a bucket of that KFC chicken and be happy. Do not allow these attractive people at the salad bar get to you--unlike you they do not have anyone to share a meal with.

The World's Best Hummus Recipe "Hummuscide"

This is a killer Hummus or as I have come to know it Hummuscide

  1. One Can of Garbanzo Beans
  2. Boil it in hot water--get rid of the water it comes in.
  3. Add 3 to 4 spoons of lemon juice in a blender
  4. One third of Sesame puree (Tahini), add to the blender
  5. Two or three spoons of olive oil, add to the blender
  6. Half a spoon of cumin for taste, add to the blender
  7. Garlic, minimum one glove, no more than three--you can skip if you plan on kissing someone.
  8. A spoon of hot red chilli pepper--the one that has Asian writing on it, this is not spice, it's liquid. It' gives you Hummus a kick
  9. Add the warm Garbanzo beans and half a cup of the water it boiled in. Blend baby Blend
  10. Serve with garnish of Sumac, pine nuts, garbanzo beans, pepper...etc.
Enjoy your Hummucide!

P.S. Make it Ft'aa style by bringing a serving pan, put bread in the bottom, sprinkle water from the pan you used to boil the garbanzo beans in, then add the Hummus. Serve with spoons and lots of Jalapeno pepper crushed with lemon juice.

I Would Risk Getting Shot To Eat @ Checkers

I Would Risk Getting Shot To Eat A Checkers Hamburger, this is true. Just do not tell mom or she will get mad.

I am over the McDonald's hamburger phase of my life. Burger King and Wendy's are fine. But no other hamburger gourmet or just fast does the trick for as me does the fresh hamburgers from Checkers. Both their beef and chicken are something to savor. Their food does not taste like a food experiment, it just tastes good.

I am not sure if you know about this chain, I think it's mostly in place where people like NASCAR--Checkers is a sponsor. What I like is the spicy flavor most hamburgers lack. Checkers does not get intimidated by flavor and most people who seek their burgers realize this too.

However, there are only two checkers in the district. Neither of those neighborhoods would be considered safe for pedestrians and people who are not from there. They are both in NE DC, if you know DC, you would stay away from this area unless escorted--it's not that bad. So, most recently, I have teamed up with a friend who is a big fan of their burgers, she would drive Roa and I there. Luckily, my friend is pregnant so she has a super appetite now. Not to forgot their really thick shakes--I love the strawberry.

So last night, we both had a two of 4 burgers and they were still as good as they were years ago. There's no skimping. Fresh onions, pickles with a kick and cheddar cheese to top it.

So, I wish they would open more stores in the district, it's one of DC's best kept secrets. Sure, you still can find them up in Maryland too, but more stores might be in order. After all, this is just a drive through / Walk up to a window place, no dine in option. And by the way my friend is due in March! I am going to hit the checkers as long as she is not going to hit her labor.

Jerusalem Is The Home Of The Original Bagel

Sure Jewish people would love to claim the bagel, and yes, some of the finest bagel shops exist in New York and take a center stage in Jewish life in that city. Every culture has something similar to this baked good. I say since Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities of the world, they might have a legitimate claim for what has later become the bagel.

For generation this baked goods has been a fixture in that city's diet, tourists would grab it and eat it. Locals would enjoy them by adding felafel and Thyme dip. Jerusalem is a n open city where Jews and Arabs live next to each other--not for long if Bibi has his way. It has been consumed for generations and thanks to some work of marketing savvy person, this ka'ak was adapted for the American on the go culture.

This video gives you a tour of the city where those vendors back their world famous Ka'ak. They talk to bakers and give you a big of history. Something about Jerusalem, its water, its air make this bagel the treat it is. This is culture exchange at its finest.

Ramadan In The Mormon Heartland

Part 1 Ramadan Rituals I Grew Up With

Part 2 Ramadan Rituals I Experienced In Gaza

As a Muslim student on the predominately Mormon Campus at Brigham Young University (BYU), I wasn’t alone. There were roughly a 100 other Muslims students who attend BYU in Provo Utah, coming from Arab countries, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China and a few other places. My first Ramadan at BYU was the hardest, as I had just arrived and did not know many people on campus.

Ramadan has always been about sharing and big gatherings, but I had to live without those my first semester at BYU. I remember it was a normal thing for me to go by myself to the university food court and break my fast alone over a Subway sandwich or a hamburger. Being alone in Ramdan especially sucks if you come from a family of ten, like me. Followers of the Mormon faith can relate to all things Ramadan-they fast once a month, they give “fast offering”, and have big families where sharing is caring.

Most on campus had grown up in parts of America where they hadn’t ever meet a Muslim, so few people on campus knew what Ramadan is. For the majority, I was the first Muslim they meet and with that comes a lot of questions that gets old after awhile. It seemed to me, that most student events on campus where they would hand out free food take place when I am fasting which really pissed me off. But I was a guest and I do not get to dictate the calender. I had a campus job and it was in the dorm’s dining room “The Smith Center” where I helped prepare food that sometimes included pork. I was quite enough not to make waves about fasting. So I would prepare whatever food they had on the menu that day. Things you would do for $6.25 and hour! On one day, I had a long shift and they kitchen had access food so they asked us to eat. The chef was Italian American names Teresa who knew I was fasting so she asked me to take food home with me. She even packed me a box and insisted I do just that because I couldn’t eat on my shift. As I finished my shift and left with the food, a manger came racing after me telling me in front of some of his staff that I am stealing food. Needless to say, I lost it.

I said nothing and I headed back to the kitchen grabbed Teresa who give him s a piece of her Italian mind, leaving him feel like a glorified jackass. I gave him the food and I left saying, “I am not a thief” That night I would have a pizza for Iftar. Occasionally, the few Muslim students would hold pot lucks on campus and I used to like those very much. The Muslim families would prepare food and bring it to share, we would bring soda and drinks. It was not uncommon to have non fasting people form campus show up to those events and learn some culture. We always welcomed such interest until those people start lining up before you to grab as much food as they can put their hands one. Leaving the fasting people little food. While most students were considerate and wait till the fasting people serve themselves, not all. The university faculty who has lived in Muslim countries make sure to send us Ramadan greeting which was kind of them. Professor Chad Emmet, a professor of Geography that has lived in Indonesia would show up and bring food at those pot lucks and so did professor James Toronto, a professor of Arabic and Muslims studies. Both members of the Mormon church who have a spot spot on their hearts for all things Islam.

My second year on campus was much better, I have met a lot more people and since the terrorists attacks of 9/11 have already happened, there was a lot more students studying Arabic and Islam. One of the things that came out of that was the Alumni Association has started a new university tradition. Every Ramadan, the association would hold an elaborate Iftar dinner for the Muslim students on campus. I think the first one we have at a world famous Sundance resort which the university owns. This would serve two purposes, make the students feel that the university cares about them prompting them to become active alumni. Also the university will get a dose of diversity, the very thing that some care about. The break the fast idea came from Tod Hendricks, an Idaho man who has never met a Muslim in his life, but felt that outreach is important. Although Mr. Hendricks is no longer at BYU, and neither am I, we still keep in touch and I am on his Christmas card list. I remember as we sat to plan the event, I had to explain to the organizers the tradition of breaking the fast with a date. They really did not understand what I meant. Instead, they thought Muslims go on a date right before they break their fast. Until a person sitting in the meeting, brought up the word figs. Only then I was understood. It was both funny and strange. Later we had to deal with the meat being served at the dinner, the famous halal vs. zabiha argument was too complicated.

During my time in Utah, I had to answer a lot of questions about my faith and the practice and there were a lot of misinformed questions and opinions, but Mormons are aware of difference the perceived image of your faith and the reality of it. While many have worked so hard to get me to convert, at one point I had seven copies of the book of Mormons in different languages. The longer I stayed in Utah, the less energized those efforts have become. Many members of the church go the extra mile to accommodate others of different faith. Till this day, I still share a meal with my Mormon friends every Ramadan. We often do it in the first Sunday of the month when they tend to fast. While many things that a Muslim living in Utah must faces some major challenges, I have seen none and I have nothing but respect for those who help people get a taste of home away form home.

Last year I took my wife to see my alma matter, she was in love. The money y we landed in Salt Lake City Airport, she proclaimed “I now have arrived to America” people are smiling and they genuinely look happy to see you. My time at BYU helped her make up her mind and attend the Catholic University of America, here in Washington DC. We joke that maybe one day, our children can go to a Jewish university in New York.

Just Take a Bite Already

Maamool or ma'mool is a popular Arabic date filled cookie.

I know realize that ma'amool is a metaphor for college life...as on the crust it looks dull and boring, "been there, done that" until you sink your teeth into it and get to a bite of the date part, things start to look a lot more fun.

Of course that works, but now they make ma'amol with nuts instead of date. But if you are a girl you know you have been on a date with few nuts in your life. NUTS, are a type of people that also exists as part of your college experience!

Scary Reportage on Farmers' Market

I have always worried about that side of the farmer's market where few greedy vendors take advantage of unassuming and caring do-gooders.

Those farmers making claims that they grow their own produce are making it harder for those who actually grow their own produce. The LA msn news team did a good job covering this story and getting in the faces of the few fake farmers.

At times I have dismissed some of those "farmers" as a scams due to their high prices and some unfounded claims. Watch the report and get ready to get scared or do what I did...laugh.

The Un-American in Me

The only un-American thing I am guilty of is not drinking a coke with my burger....I know in American this is a BIG sin and it does not sit well with many friends.

Consuming sods is third to Freedom, free enterprise! Freedom rules dude.

For a guy who likes burgers, I know waiters always epect me to order a coke along with the burger....but my lack of excitement for coke, I made up for by my love to Fries.

Wind River Goodness Jerky

You know what's it like to find your favorite Jerky? It's like wining the lottery.... That's how I felt when I discovered Wind river Buffalo Jerky in little shop in the City of Orem in Utah in shadows of the Wasatch Mountains where jerky is celebrated in this outdoor crazed state. walking down State Street I see this little whole in the wall store that only sells Jerky....before I walked in, I thought this place will only be selling different types of Jerky from here and there. But once Roa and I walked into the Store we were greeted by Dian, a nice lady who greeted us and just wanted to talk about her jerky. She had me all once I learned she is cooking her jerky in the back of her shop...the aroma all over the place meant I would have to buy a load of her jerky. She asked me to sample some of her buffalo jerky and I did. Hot Pepper (Really hot no wusses allowed) and Lemon Pepper and I left the store with three different packs....I let happy. Chewy, fresh and falvorfaul that's how I would describe Wind River Creations.... Dian uses not preservatives and cooks up small batches to keep it fresh. She is very energized and excited when she talks about her recipes. Roa who can care less for jerky loves the lady and her spirit. Dian told us she ships orders all over the place, and has few stores that sell her jerky....but it's still a one man show and that's when you know the product is great. I only hopes Roa have packed some Wind River jerky in our carry one as I felt the next for some fine stakes on the go...Dian will be hearing from me again and getting more of my business.

Happy 4th!

4th of July upon us once more....

The one day that dogs rule...the one day we all get to enjoy dogs....the one day not only it's nutritional, but also patriotic to consume a dog...you do it for America.

Dogs....dogs....dogs....dogs and cats get none of the attention....

Gosh it sucks to be a cat on the 4th....

Also if the amount of fireworks purchased on the 4th of July was an indication of patriotism, the founding fathers would've to be Mexicans.

Ghiradelli Chocolate

America has found its zen. There is only one place that makes chocolate treats worthy to be called chocolate. That's right Ghiradelli Chocolate are those!

They make America's best chocolate produced for the masses without losing what makes them unique. I am in love with their Dark Chocolate Carmel center squares...it just does not get any better. While I try to consume less milk chocolate, I have tried a great deal of their chocolate products and I am afraid many Europeans are upset by America's finest chocolate producer.

In Thanksgiving of 2001, I actually went to their store in San Francisco and fresh in the United States, I liked them, but I did not celebrate them until few years ago that I rediscovered them.

I know there might be some smaller vendors who make fine chocolate here in the States, but I do not think anyhow can rival Ghiradellie Chocolate in making their chocolate avialable pretty much anywhere Target, Safeway, Giant, Amazon and making them stand out in terms of taste, quality and importantly packaging.

I know the Speaker of the House keeps in her office boxes of those delicacies which she shares with those who visit her office. that would be a good enough reason to visit with the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.

Soon, I will be testing out their Brownie Mix, as brownie lover since my dorm days in Utah where brownies are everybody's choice, I will accept nothing by perfection from this American icon.

Not Your Average Pizza

Try this,

Roa likes baking and I do top, we often find ourselves in a grocery store and the one thing we always buy is dough. You know the kind they sell in tubes or sometimes in plastic bags. We like to top them with different things....cheese, tomato, Zaatar, eggs, and now we do spinach too. It's a great idea to have something great to eat or munch on in 20 minutes. Yesterday Roa chopped up some spinich, saute it in olive oil, add chili pepper, lemon juice, sprinkle salt add minced onions (we prefer the frozen ones). then take that top it on your dough and bake it away.

Here is one thing we like to do and I also found somone who enjoys baking them in a similar fashion.

Olive oil, zaatar and minced garlic pizza sauce

I’ve been dying to try a Middle East themed pizza. My idea? Mixing dried zaatar (a regional spice spelled numerous ways in translation) with olive oil and minced garlic to brush on the fresh crust. I used to buy hot flatbreads in Kuwait all the time with a similar concoction brushed on. So I’m confident it would work well on pizza. If you feel like going fresh with it however, I found this recipe for zaatar pesto from GreenProphet.Com sounds amazing. It’s made with fresh versions of all the herbs found in traditional zaatar powder.
